Now Trending: The Curve Cut

Jennifer Aniston’s renowned “Rachel” haircut from the beloved ’90s sitcom Friends has solidified its place as one of the most iconic hairstyles of our time. Its impact on pop culture is undeniable, and it remains a timeless inspiration for current hair trends. In 2023, this iconic haircut has evolved to become even more versatile and wearable, and it’s being called The Curve Cut (or the C-Shape Cut)!

This modern take on the classic style uses precise hair cutting techniques and is all about soft lines and a feathered, graduated angle. The layers are longer around the face, but it’s still styled to curve inwards and hug the face like the original. While similar to the original, this results in a style that emphasizes length, fullness and captivating movement. It also happens to flatter most face shapes!

Why Is It So Flattering?

The layered nature of the cut adds dimension and movement to the hair, creating a sense of volume and texture. When combined with the right salon hair styling products, this can be particularly beneficial for individuals with fine or thin hair, as the layers provide the illusion of fuller and more voluminous locks.

The layers also help to frame the face, drawing attention to the eyes, cheekbones and jawline. Along with drawing attention to these features, the face-framing layers will also enhance these features by helping to soften any sharp angles. Features aside, this hairstyle is versatile and can be adapted to suit various face shapes as well. So whether short or long, there’s a length of Curve Cut for you!

Who Does It Work Best on?

As noted above, the Curve Cut is known for its ability to flatter various face shapes. With that said, it does tend to work particularly well for those with more rounded or oval face shapes that feature medium to high forehead sizes. This is because the face-framing layers of the style can help to balance the proportions of the face, soften the angles of the face and draw attention to the cheekbones and eyes instead of the forehead to create a more balanced and harmonious look.

In terms of hair texture, this is a haircut that can work well with almost any hair type. That said, it is particularly well-suited for those with straight or wavy hair in order to add movement, body and dimension and combat flatness. For these same reasons, this cut tends to be a great choice for those with fine or thin hair who desire more fullness. With the right styling techniques and products, though, the Curve Cut can be easily adapted to suit any hair type or face shape!

How to Style a Curve Cut

This hairstyle is all about framing the face (and, of course, has a C-shaped calling card), so leaning into the curves in your layers is essential when styling! This is an extremely versatile cut and there are many ways to do that, but you’ll find some of our favorites down below!

1.    Sleek and Straight:

For a polished and sleek look, begin by applying a heat protectant spray to damp hair. Blow dry your hair straight using a round brush, and be sure to curve the ends inward toward the face as you do. Once dry, divide your hair into sections and use a flat iron to straighten each section from root to tip (once again, curving inward slightly toward the face). To achieve a super smooth finish, run a few drops of hair serum or shine-enhancing oil through the lengths of your hair. Finish with a lightweight hairspray to keep the style in place without weighing it down. This straight and sleek style is a sophisticated and timeless approach to the haircut that showcases the clean lines and full vibe of the cut.

2.    Messy Updo with Face-Framing Pieces:

To create a playful and casual updo, begin by applying a texturizing spray or dry shampoo to add grip and texture to your hair. Tease the crown area slightly for extra volume and then gather the hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a hair elastic. Twist or braid the ponytail and wrap it around the base to create a messy bun. Use bobby pins to secure the bun in place, and pull out a few strands for a relaxed and effortless feel. Finish with a light-hold hairspray to hold the style while maintaining the messy and carefree vibe. This updo adds a touch of playfulness and showcases the layers and face-framing elements of the haircut.

3.    Low Space Buns with Face-Framing Pieces:

To create this trendy and playful style, apply a texturizing spray or dry shampoo to add grip and texture to your hair. Use a comb to make a clean and defined parting line, and divide your hair into two equal sections (one on each side of the part). Take one section of hair and twist it into a low bun at the nape of your neck. Wrap the hair around itself and secure it with bobby pins. Repeat the same process with the other section of hair, creating a second low bun on the opposite side. Depending on how short your layers are, you’ll want to be cautious if you decide to tug/separate them to avoid them falling apart. Pull some shorter strands out from near the face and let them loose for a casual look.

How to Maintain a Curve Cut

If you prefer that your hair (or even just certain layers) be on the shorter side, then you’ll likely need to go see your stylist at the salon a little more often; otherwise, regular trims will be enough to keep the shape of your layers sharp! From here, choosing professional hair care products specifically for your hair type and desired style will only lend itself to your new style. The use of quality conditioners or masks will allow your layers to bounce and shine the way that they should!
